Dear President Trump,

Thank you for your courageous leadership on behalf of Israel. Your recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital righted a 70-year wrong. But now the U.S. is making the exact same mistake and I am asking you to make it right, as well.

Fifty years after Israel captured the Golan Heights in its defensive war against Syria, the U.S. still refuses to recognize Israel’s claim to this strategic and vital territory. Instead, it labels the Golan as “Israeli-occupied” land. But that label—like references to Israeli-occupied Jerusalem—is wrong on legal, historical and strategic grounds.

First, Israel’s claim is valid legally because, under international law, nations have the right to hold and keep territory gained in a defensive war.

Second, the Golan Heights have been part of Israel since biblical times. The Golan Heights, or Bashan, as it was known, was part of the land allotted to the twelve tribes of Israel some 3,500 years ago.

And third, Israel’s very existence hinges on the Golan Heights. Without it, Israel might have disappeared in the 1973 Yom Kippur war when Syria invaded with a massive armada of tanks and troops. But Israel defeated Syria in the Golan despite being outnumbered and outgunned. Without the Golan, Syria would have charged freely into Israel’s heartland and could have taken Tel Aviv within hours.

For all these reasons, I ask you to recognize the Golan Heights as sovereign Israeli territory. Please act now to right a historical wrong and recognize Israel’s valid, legitimate and necessary claim to the Golan Heights.
