Yet, seated next to Turkish President Erdogan during a July visit to Turkey, Trump announced he is likely to approve the sale of U.S.-built F-35 jets to Turkey. He hasn’t budged since then.

When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu protested to Washington, Trump responded, “Nobody tells me what we should be selling or not. Turkey’s been a tremendous ally.”

Selling F-35s to Turkey triggered loud alarms in Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that “Turkey is a great country, but it’s governed by a man who calls openly for the annihilation of Israel,” referring to Erdogan.

“He occupies half of Cyprus, a NATO country,” Netanyahu added. “He's threatening Greece, another NATO country, and he talks openly about conquering Jerusalem.”
