President Trump declares “National Day of Shabbat”

Event coincides with Israel’s “Jerusalem Day” holiday

Jewish people all across the world are celebrating Yom Yerushalayim, aka “Jerusalem Day.” The Israeli public holiday commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967.

Celebrations include a large "Dance of Flags" parade through Jerusalem's Old City, special prayers at the Western Wall, state ceremonies, and lectures on the history of Jerusalem.

Last week, President Donald Trump announced a National Day of Shabbat here in America to coincide with the Israeli holiday. In his May 4, 2026, proclamation, President Trump called “upon Americans to celebrate the heritage and contributions of Jewish Americans and to observe this month with appropriate programs, activities, and ceremonies. I further call on all Americans to celebrate their faith and freedom throughout this year, during this month, and especially on Shabbat to celebrate our 250th year.”
