From Israel To The Olympic Stage
Building life-changing faith in young leaders
Through our Covenant Journey ministry, we are blessed to work with extraordinary Christian college-age students who are becoming bold leaders for Christ around the world.
Olympian twin sisters Bethany and Serena Barr are two powerful examples of what God can do when young believers are strengthened in their faith.
Will you help send the next generation of Christian leaders to Israel today? Your gift can help students experience the life-changing faith journey that shaped Bethany and Serena.
The Barr sisters grew up in Ireland and earned field hockey scholarships to Liberty University. They graduated as co-captains in 2017 — just weeks before traveling to Israel through Covenant Journey.
That trip deepened their faith and strengthened their calling to live boldly for Christ. But their story begins with heartbreak.
Nine years earlier, their beloved sister Charlene died from cystic fibrosis at just 20 years old. Before she passed, Charlene encouraged her sisters to win the national championship.
Bethany, Serena, and their older sister, Natalie, honored that moment by tattooing “Ao1” — Audience of One — on their arms, declaring they play for Jesus alone. They went on to win that championship and dedicated the victory to Christ and to their sister.
Charlene’s faith also inspired them to serve others. Charlene had raised 120,000 British pounds to build a school for underprivileged children in Uganda after a mission trip touched her heart. After her passing, the Barr sisters helped complete the project so Charlene’s dream could live on.
Years later, the twins faced the biggest moment of their athletic careers.
On October 30, 2019, Ireland faced Canada in a world qualifying match for the 2020 Olympic Games. With the clock running down, Bethany stepped up to take a penalty shot.
Their Olympic dream hung in the balance. Later she explained what was going through her mind:
“I kept repeating to myself — Audience of One. I wasn’t doing it for myself … I was doing it for God.”
Please make a generous gift today to sponsor a student’s Covenant Journey and help raise up more leaders who live for an “Audience of One.”
Ireland won the match in overtime — becoming the first women’s team in Irish history to qualify for the Olympics. And it happened exactly nine years to the day after Charlene’s death.
Today, Bethany and Serena use their national platform to share their faith in Jesus with audiences around the world. But their journey of faith was strengthened during their time in Israel through Covenant Journey.
And there are thousands more young leaders just like them.
When Christian college-age students walk where Jesus walked, study Scripture in the land of the Bible, and connect with other believers, their faith is transformed.
We call them Gideon’s Army — young leaders who will influence campuses, churches, and nations for Christ. And we are seeing God raise them up everywhere.
Despite the challenges facing this generation, we see something extraordinary: young believers who love the Lord and are ready to change the world. Your support today helps send them to Israel — where their faith, courage, and leadership are strengthened for a lifetime.
Will you help send the next generation of Christian leaders to Israel today?
Thank you for helping raise up the next generation of Christian leaders.
