US Military Intervention?
Trump Weighing Whether to Send US troops to Israel-Iran Conflict
Six days into the Israel-Iran conflict, President Donald J. Trump has declared his patience with Iran’s rogue state “has already run out.” But what that means for the U.S. military remains unclear.
Christians in Defense of Israel is polling our readers so we can report to the White House, Congress, and media outlets how Americans feel about U.S. military intervention in the Israel-Iran conflict.
Should Trump send American ground troops to Iran?
Republican support
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-NC) has made his stance clear, noting that “diplomacy didn’t work” with Iran, despite multiple U.S. administrations trying but failing to stop Iran’s mad quest for nuclear weapons.
“Either you want them to have a nuclear weapon, or you don’t, and if you don’t, if diplomacy fails, you use force,” Sen. Graham said. “If you don’t understand that Iran with a nuclear weapon is the biggest danger in the world, you’re missing a lot. If you don’t understand this is a religious Nazi regime, you’re not listening to what they say.”
Republican opposition
Sen. Thomas Massie (R-KY) holds an entirely different opinion.
“This is not our war,” Sen. Massie posted on social media Monday. He has since introduced a “War Powers Resolution” bill in Congress that would prohibit U.S. involvement in the conflict. Massie is joined Democrats Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), among others.
Sen. Massie’s bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), who tweeted: “No war in Iran. It's time for every member to go on record. Are you with the neocons who led us into Iraq, or do you stand with the American people?”
President Trump’s plans
Reporters asked President Trump on Wednesday whether he planned U.S. military intervention. Trump’s response was cagey.
"Yes, I may do it. I may not do it,” Trump told reporters. “I mean, nobody knows what I'm going to do. I can tell you this, that Iran's got a lot of trouble and they want to negotiate.”
Trump recounted his recent discussion with the Iranians: “Why didn't you negotiate with me before all this death and destruction? Why didn't you go? I said to people, why didn't you negotiate with me two weeks ago? You could have done fine. You would have had a country. It's very sad to watch this.”
