In early August, Speaker Mike Johnson visited Israeli towns in the so-called "West Bank." It's the disputed territory properly known by its biblical name, Judea and Samaria, the heartland of historic Israel.

Speaking to Israeli mayors of towns in Judea and Samaria, Speaker Johnson firmly endorsed Israel's right to this land that three-quarters of the world’s nations want to remake into “Palestine.” Johnson’s words were historic:

“Scripture teaches us that the mountains of Judea and Samaria were promised to the Jewish people, and they belong to them by right. But many people around the world do not see it like this. They label it the ‘occupied territories’ or the ‘West Bank’ or any other name. Every mayor here should know exactly where we stand regarding this issue — and we stand with you.”

Jaws dropped and heads swiveled in Western capitals and across the Middle East when Johnson's comments were reported. No senior American leader has ever offered the Jewish people so full-throated and unequivocal an endorsement of Jewish sovereignty.

But Speaker Johnson’s words, while wonderful, are not enough. Western nations like France and Great Britain are lining up to create “Palestine,” handing Israel’s God-given land to the enemies of Israel.

While in Israel, Speaker Johnson also prayed at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, where he announced: “Our prayer is that America will always stand with Israel.”

May it be! But with changing attitudes and rising antisemitism here at home, that is very much in doubt. We must pray — and act.
