NYC Mayor Threatens Synagogues
Synagogues in the city with the largest Jewish population in the U.S. were told this weekend that if they dare observe the Sabbath... if they dare open their temples... if they dare hold Passover dinner... the city will illegally and unconstitutionally force the temple to close permanently.
“Everyone has been instructed that if they see worship services going on, they will go to the officials of the congregation, they’ll inform them they need to stop the services and disperse. If that does not happen, they will take additional action up to the point of fines and potentially closing the building permanently.” NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio
De Blasio’s threats are blatantly illegal and unconstitutional – an absolute violation of First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion. They are also a deeply chilling warning that echoes from the past for every Jewish believer.
What will Mayor de Blasio do when New York Jews choose to follow God instead of the mayor’s dictates? Will he force disobedient Jews to wear some sort of visible symbol distinguishing them from the rest of the population?
If Jews refuse to comply with the Mayor and instead follow God’s ordinances, will de Blasio then somehow “mark” the non-compliant Jews? And when de Blasio shutters those synagogues, will he post signs on them designed to humiliate and shame the congregants?
New York City’s very large Jewish population should be spending Passover breaking bread with fellow believers — in the city where George Washington prayed for God’s grace on a fledgling Republic that was formed to protect the very rights that Mayor Bill de Blasio now wants to take away.
There is a spiritual battle playing out right in our midst. It’s up to us to ensure that this year, the year of our Lord 2020, will NOT be the year we allow synagogues and churches to be closed by petty tyrants.
