Abbas: Palestinians Go Back 5,000 Years
Palestinian strongman Mahmoud Abbas has an iron grip on power. Elected in 2005, he’s now in the 14th year of his four-year term as Palestinian Authority (PA) president.
But however rigid his hold on power, Abbas has an extremely shaky grasp of the truth.
A few weeks back, the aging chieftain made this defiant declaration in Ramallah, where the PA has its headquarters:
“We will remain in our homeland, and the outsiders on this land have no right in this country. The land is for its inhabitants, this land is for the Canaanites who were here 5,000 years ago, and we are the Canaanites.”
But those so-called “outsiders”—the Jewish people—have been continuously living in the Holy Land for almost 3,500 years. And the Jewish claim to the land stems ultimately from God's gracious promise to Abraham: "The whole land of Canaan . . . I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants" (Genesis 17:8).
Instead, Palestinians are Arabs—not Canaanites. And Arabs first arrived in Judea in 637 AD with the Muslim invasion from the Arab peninsula, as Dr. Mordechai Kedar, a senior lecturer in the Department of Arabic at Bar-Ilan University, recently told Breaking Israel News.
+ + Despite Abbas, the book of Palestinian history is blank.
The Palestinian people are absent from the historical record. One way this is evident is from a check of Google’s “Ngram Viewer,” which charts the appearance of unique terms in books from 1800 to the present. A search for “Palestinian state” or “Palestinian people” turns up almost no instances before the late 1960s, when the number shoots upward.
Nor do references to the Palestinian people show up in United Nations documents before the early 1970s.
But simple truth like that doesn't stop Abbas. In the fact-free world in which he moves, he is at liberty to make unfounded claims without fear of contradiction—even at the UN.
Last year, Abbas told this whopper in front of the Security Council: "We are the descendants of the Canaanites who lived in the land of Palestine 5,000 years ago, and continuously remained there to this day."
He made that claim with a straight face—but without evidence and proof. But no factcheckers in the major media bothered to correct the record. The New York Times ignored Abbas' egregious lie.
Which is why Christians in Defense of Israel is so needed. With your kind and generous financial help, we expose these and other falsehoods used to deny Israel’s claim to its God-given land.
+ + Abbas converts Jesus into a "Palestinian messenger."
Abbas lays claim to Jesus, too. He converts the Jewish messiah, the descendant of David, into a “Palestinian messenger” whose "message resonates in our prayers for our people in our capital Jerusalem. . ."
Likewise, Palestinians convert the Temple Mount—the site where Jewish temples stood for some 800 years--into an exclusively Muslim holy site. And the UN plays along.
UNESCO did its part to erase Israel's history by referring to the Temple Mount—where Solomon prayed and Jesus was presented to the Lord—with exclusively Arab/Muslim names. Instead of "Temple Mount," UNESCO used the term, "Al-Haram Al-Sharif."
It was as if the Jewish Temple—and the Jewish state—never existed.
Again, this is why Christians in Defense of Israel is so needed. And why I ask for your help now to keep on exposing these and other falsehoods used to attack Israel and undermine its legitimate, historical claim to its God-given land.
