"Political Hit Job" Targets Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu today blasted what he called a "political hit job," calling just-announced bribery and breach of trust charges against him a "house of cards" that will collapse. See my important update below and stand in prayer for "Bibi" and the nation of Israel at this turbulent time. CLICK HERE NOW to let Prime Minister Netanyahu know you're standing with him! - Mat

Earthshaking...and absurd. That's the best way to describe today's announcement that Israel's attorney general will seek to indict Prime Minister Netanyahu on bribery and breach of trust charges.

The news hits five weeks before Israeli voters head to the polls on April 9. Netanyahu dismissed the looming charges as "ridiculous" and a "political hit job." But with the election so near, the charges could help push him from power and usher in a new left-leaning government.

The charges allege Netanyahu handed out favors in exchange for, in one case, gifts of cigars and champagne, and, in the other two, for less hostile news coverage - even though the news treatment stayed as hostile as ever.

+  +  +  Israeli "Deep State" at Work

The charges are just the latest in a long series of "deep state" investigations used to attack Netanyahu since his first term as prime minister in 1996. There have been some 22 such investigations, by one count.

The Prime Minister, like President Donald Trump, is a political lightning rod to the left. His pro-growth, capitalist policies have transformed the Israeli economy from socialist basket-case into a high-tech and innovation powerhouse. That, and Netanyahu's posture of military strength as the best path to peace, has turned him into a political pinata.

In Israel, left-wing elites see Netanyahu as "a demonic figure" - as one Israeli commentator put it - someone who defeated socialism and unleashed capitalism in the Jewish state.

To Israeli leftists, that's unforgivable. Now they're "on a hunting spree against me," the Prime Minister said today, near tears.

"We have led Israel to the best decade in its history," he said. "These accusations will crumble when I'll bring dozens of witnesses that were never questioned."

Lawyer Alan Dershowitz dismisses the current bribery accusations against Netanyahu as an attempt by police and prosecutors to "criminalize...political differences."

That sounds strikingly familiar - given the ongoing Russia collusion investigation against President Trump. After a two-year investigation, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr announced this month, "There is no factual evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia."

+  +  +  "Absurd" Accusations

Now, neither leader is without flaws. But the criminal accusations against Netanyahu are, in the words of Israeli journalist Caroline Glick "absurd."
